Real talk – as I’m writing this list of 16 common SEO mistakes to avoid in your blog, I’m reflecting on how many of my clients were, in fact, guilty of making them before I started working with them.

The answer is more than 70%! Shocking, I know.

Those folks have spent hours writing inspiring, sustainable living articles, yet most of them were destined to go unseen from the get-go. All because of some totally avoidable basic SEO mistakes.

The good news is that there is an easy fix for each and every one of them. To help you navigate the SEO world and finally have the high-ranking, impactful website you deserve, I’ve rounded up some issues that might be sabotaging your eco-friendly articles.

The most common SEO mistakes bloggers make in 2024

First things first, SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is essentially the process of optimizing your website to improve its visibility and ranking in search engine results pages (SERPs). It’s the process of fine-tuning your blog so that search engines like Google can easily find and understand it, ultimately driving more organic traffic to your site.

Now, despite its importance, many bloggers and website owners make common mistakes when it comes to SEO. These mistakes can range from neglecting keyword research and overlooking on-page optimization to ignoring internal linking and neglecting technical SEO issues.  

You see, search engines rely on various factors to determine the relevance and authority of a website. When you make SEO mistakes, you’re essentially sending the wrong signals to search engines, which can result in lower rankings and less visibility for your content.

I’ve seen time and time again newbie bloggers use generic phrases like “women’s fashion” or “sustainable living” in the hopes of ranking first in these oversaturated queries.

But here’s the thing: if you’re not doing PROPER keyword research, you might be missing out on some golden opportunities to get your content in front of the right audience.

After all, research shows that 75% of users never scroll past the first page of search results. Plus, the top 3 organic search results receive more than two-thirds (68.7%) of all clicks on the Google Search page.   

Easy fix: Instead of guessing, invest time in thorough keyword research using tools like Google Keyword Planner or SEMrush. Look for long-tail keywords and phrases with lower competition but higher relevance to your content. This is the single most common SEO mistake bloggers make – and it’s also one of the most easily avoidable! Think about the last time you visited a website that took forever to load or had pop-up ads popping up every two seconds. Not a great experience, right?

Well, guess what? Search engines don’t like it either! If your site isn’t providing a smooth and seamless experience for users, it’s like shooting yourself in the foot when it comes to SEO. Experts point out that every $1 invested in UX results in a return of $100 (ROI = 9,900%). That’s how powerful it is!

Okay, let’s get real for a second. With the majority of internet users accessing content on mobile devices, optimizing your blog for mobile is non-negotiable. How often do you find yourself scrolling through your phone, looking for something online?

If you’re anything like me, it’s probably a lot! That’s why it’s so important to make sure your blog is optimized for mobile. Because if it’s not, you’re basically telling all those mobile users to take a hike! 39% will stop engaging with content when loading time takes too long – I am one of them!

Easy fix: Use mobile-friendly design principles and test your website on various devices to ensure compatibility. Implement responsive design techniques and optimize images and media for faster loading times on mobile devices.

5. Not creating high-quality content

Content is king in the world of SEO. I know, you’ve heard that phrase a gazillion times before. But, it’s true! Readers want meaty, valuable content that’s going to educate, entertain, or solve their problems – not leave them scratching their heads wondering why they bothered clicking in the first place. Google’s watching. When it comes to ranking your site, the big G has a keen eye for quality.

If your content is thin, shallow, or just plain meh, you can bet your bottom dollar Google’s going to take notice – and not in a good way. Your site’s credibility and authority will take a nosedive.

Write for humans, not search engines.

Again, new bloggers might not know that, but each one of your articles should have at least 3-4 links to reputable sources.

You want to back up your claims, right? A simple “toxic chemicals in clothing are bad for the environment” won’t do.

You want to prove your argument! When Google assesses the quality and relevance of your content, it looks for evidence that supports your claims and assertions. Without external references and citations to reputable sources, your content may appear unsubstantiated and lacking in credibility, which can negatively impact your search engine rankings.

Easy fix: Look for high-quality sources such as academic journals, industry publications, government websites, and recognized experts in your field. Provide hyperlinks to these sources within your content whenever possible, and use proper citation formats to acknowledge the original authors and creators.

8. Ignoring internal linking

Did you know that internal linking is like the secret sauce of SEO? Internal linking is all about connecting the dots between different pages and posts on your website. It’s like laying down a trail of breadcrumbs that leads visitors on a journey through your content wonderland.

When you strategically place internal links within your blog posts, you’re not only making it easier for search engines to crawl and index your site, but you’re also encouraging visitors to stick around and dive deeper into what you have to offer.

Use alt text to provide brief descriptions of each image, making them more accessible to both search engines and users. Additionally, compress images to reduce file sizes without compromising quality, improving your site’s performance.

Neglecting local SEO is like setting up a storefront in a bustling city but forgetting to put up a sign – potential customers may walk right by without even noticing your business. Approximately 98% of users choose a business that is listed on page one of the SERPs. That’s a big deal! If your blog targets a specific geographic location, optimizing for local search is crucial for attracting relevant traffic and potential customers. 

Easy fix: Start by claiming your Google My Business listing and ensuring that all information is accurate and up-to-date. Incorporate location-specific keywords naturally into your content and meta tags, and seek out opportunities to earn backlinks from local businesses and directories. Oh, and don’t forget to encourage satisfied customers to leave positive reviews on platforms like Google and Yelp to improve your local search visibility.

11. Neglecting to optimize for voice search

Wait what? I have to optimize that too? Yes, you definitely have to! Neglecting to optimize your content for voice search can result in missed opportunities to capture traffic from the growing number of users who rely on voice-enabled devices and virtual assistants to search the web.

Voice search queries often differ from traditional text-based queries in terms of syntax, intent, and length, so failing to optimize for voice search can lead to lower visibility and traffic for your website.

Easy fix: Use tools like Answer the Public, SEMrush, or Google’s Keyword Planner to identify question-based queries and long-tail keywords that are commonly used in voice search. Incorporate these keywords naturally into your content, and optimize for featured snippets to increase the likelihood of being selected as a voice search result.

Test your content using voice search queries on devices like smartphones, smart speakers, and virtual assistants to ensure that they deliver accurate and relevant responses.

No featured snippers=missed opportunities, trust me! These little SEO gems, also known as “position zero” results, are the first thing users see as soon as they research a term on Google, giving you a chance to shine bright and grab their attention. Experts point out that featured snippets get 35.1% of all clicks, so let’s secure them!

Easy fix: Dive into some keyword research and scope out those SERP features. Target those burning questions and informational keywords that are like catnip for featured snippets. Then, get busy formatting your content in a way that’s snackable and easy to digest. Break it up with header tags like H2 and H3 to guide search engines to the juiciest bits that deserve that top spot. Trust me, it’s worth the effort!

You want to address technical SEO issues such as crawl errors, broken links, and duplicate content to improve site performance and search engine rankings. Granted, that may require some expertise. 

Easy fix: You can easily utilize tools like Google Search Console and Screaming Frog to identify and fix technical issues on your site. Use redirects to fix broken links, remove duplicate content, and ensure that your site’s XML sitemap is up-to-date and correctly configured.

14. Failing to monitor analytics

Failing to monitor analytics is like driving a car without a dashboard – you have no idea how fast you’re going, where you’re headed, or if you’re even on the right track. Analytics provide valuable insights into your website’s performance and user behavior, allowing you to track the effectiveness of your SEO efforts and make data-driven decisions.

In my experience, new bloggers more often than not neglect to post on their social media because, let’s face it, their following is super small. So, it won’t really make any difference, right? WRONG! Social media platforms are powerful tools for promoting your content, increasing visibility, and driving traffic to your blog. Yes, even if you only have 200 followers. 

Easy fix: Develop a social media strategy that includes regularly sharing blog posts on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Use engaging visuals, compelling captions, and relevant hashtags to attract attention and encourage sharing. Engage with your audience by responding to comments, asking questions, and participating in conversations related to your niche.

16. Not staying updated on algorithm changes

Let’s get one thing straight, search engine algorithms are constantly evolving. And I mean constantly, like all the freaking time. In one single year, Google launched more than 5 updates. It’s extremely important to stay informed about the latest updates and trends to maintain your website’s visibility and rankings.

If you are serious about blogging, dedicate time each week to staying updated on industry news and algorithm changes by reading reputable SEO blogs, following industry experts on social media, and participating in online forums and communities. 

Easy fix: Keep a close eye on Google’s official announcements and documentation, as well as updates from other major search engines like Bing and Yahoo. If you see any new updates, adjust your SEO strategy accordingly based on the latest information and best practices.
